One study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health focused on optimistic women to determine whether an optimistic outlook seemed to effect risk factors for major causes of death, including heart disease, infection, cancer, stroke, and respiratory disease.

The results? The group of optimistic women were, on average, almost 30 percent less likely to die from any of the diseases included in the study when compared to the least optimistic group of women. When broken down, the optimistic women’s risk factor for dying from each disease ranged from 16 percent to a whopping 52 percent lower risk than than the group of less optimistic women.

Learned optimism skills make a difference

Another example of mental positivity altering whole body health comes from a 2014 study at the University of California, San Francisco, spearheaded by Professor Judith T. Moskowitz, a professor of medical sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. In this study, Professor Moskowitz and her colleagues came up with eight positivity skills designed to encourage positive emotions in people who had been diagnosed with HIV.

The results were undeniable — the group of people who practice these skills were better about taking their medication, were less likely to need antidepressants, and carried a lower load of the virus. This was compared to another group of people diagnosed with HIV who received only general support, without the positivity skills training.

This particular study makes an impact not only due to it showcasing the power of positivity, but also because it shows that you can learn these skills. On the subject of placebos, Jo looked to neuroscientist and placebo researcher Fabrizio Benedetti for answers. Mr. Benedetti suggested that there isn’t only one placebo effect, but instead multiple ways a placebo can be experienced in a positive way.

For example, placebo painkillers have been shown to trigger the release of the body’s natural painkiller — endorphins. Similarly, Parkinson’s patients received a dose of natural dopamine when taking a placebo, while fake oxygen cut the symptoms of altitude sickness in those who were at an altitude high enough to trigger illness.

These examples show that placebos can create a response unique to the users’ condition or experiences, which leads us to believe that different types of placebos, including positive thoughts, will likewise create a unique response in the people using it.

During the course of her research, Jo partook in everything from placebo painkillers she ordered herself to personally trying new virtual reality therapies being used to help treat burn victims. As far as the self-administered placebo painkiller pill was concerned, her symptoms were relieved within 20 minutes, though she admits that her experience doesn’t quite count as a scientific trial.

Beyond the placebo pill, Jo’s experiences overall were overwhelmingly in favor of the mind playing a much larger role in health and healing than most people give it credit for. After speaking with people who are successfully and knowingly utilizing different forms of placebos to alter their health, Jo argues that there is much more to placebos and the mind-body connection than science has found thus far.

Once the effects of placebos are understood and acknowledged, it’s easy to make the jump from placebo pill to placebo thought. Choosing to think positively through mindfulness, meditation, or inspirational quotes may be a forced practice at first, but over time the brain will be trained to think positively on its own. In this way, the placebo eventually becomes the real deal, and all you’re left with is the reward.

Most people view this statement as a sweet sentiment and nothing more, but some argue that positive vibes can actually be experienced on some level by the recipient. Surprisingly, there may be truth to that belief, as illustrated by a study done at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, which specializes in studies on spirituality and consciousness.

The study in question, named The Love Study for reasons that will become obvious, took a look at the unconscious nervous systems of 37 couples who considered their relationships to be strong and affectionate.

When one subject was shown a photo of the other on a closed-circuit television screen, he or she was instructed to, “think about sending loving, compassionate intention.” Their partner’s physical response was measured using electrodes designed to capture changes in blood volume to the fingers.

The results? After all 37 couples ran through the test, researchers found that when one person saw the image of their partner and focused on sending “loving, compassionate intention” that the partners’ blood flow and perspiration shifted dramatically, all within two seconds of the image showing on screen.

The Love Study isn’t the only study that has been conducted on the theory of one person’s intentional thoughts affecting someone else. There have been more than three dozen double blind, randomized studies in the subject by other respected institutions, all reporting similar findings.

The fact that each and every study came to similar conclusions show that this was not a one-off, chance finding, but instead that there is truth to “sending positive vibes” to someone, and having those thoughts make a difference.

The power of prayer

Similar thoughts are placed on prayer — the person praying surely experiences the prayer, but what about the person who is being prayed for?

One researcher claims that she has seen a direct, positive effect on AIDS patients who consider themselves to be spiritual people. Gail Ironson is a professor at the University of Miami and an AIDS researcher, and her controversial findings are opening the door to more questions on spirituality, prayer, and whether one’s spiritual beliefs can alter how their body deals with illness.

Ironson’s studies have shown that AIDS patients who consider their faith to be an important part of their health journey fare better than those who turned away from God after diagnosis. The effects were much more than whether or not the patients felt depressed, however; the individuals who felt connected to God after their diagnosis had a lower viral load and better maintained their immune cells than those who felt further away from God after being diagnosed with AIDS.

Put simply, Ironson discovered that AIDS patients who felt a strong connection to God had bodies that were better at fighting their disease.

All of these fascinating findings lead us to a very interesting question: can your thoughts affect the health and well-being of someone else? To some, it may sound like voodoo. To others, it may seem like a hopeful probability.
